Karen Kae Chrtt

     Karen Kae Chrtt (Steffen), age 67, of Canby, MN died peacefully at the Hendricks Community Hospital on September 8, 2012 surrounded by her family.
     Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14, 2012 at Grace United Methodist Church in Hendricks, MN with Pastor Robert Neff officiating. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 pm with a 6:45 p.m. prayer service on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Birk Funeral Home in Canby. Burial will be in the Bohemian Cemetery, rural Hendricks.
     Karen’s family prefers memorials to Hendricks Hospice, PO Box 106, Hendricks, MN 56136.
     Karen was born April 29, 1945 in Britt, Iowa to Louie and El Dora (Jants) Steffen. As a child, her family moved to Canby, MN. She was baptized on Sept. 2, 1945 at First English Evangelical Church in Canby and confirmed on June 5, 1960 at First English Lutheran Church in Marshall. Karen married Ernest Chrtt on February 15, 1964 at the Swedish Mission Church, Astoria SD. Together they farmed south west of Canby until 2007, where they retired and continued to live.
     Karen worked many different jobs throughout her life, making a multitude of friends. Among those jobs were Teakwood Bar, Porter MN, Canby Home Bakery, Marble Store and DeToy’s Restaurant in Canby. Some of her happiest times were spent with her family, especially with her grandchildren. She always said that if she had known how much fun grand kids were, she would have had them first. She also enjoyed feeding and watching the orioles and hummingbirds on the farm. She could not resist a good rummage sale, or sharing a joke or a kind word on Facebook.
     Karen is survived by her husband of 48 years, Ernest Chrtt, three sons Troy, Watertown, SD, Terry, Fairfield Il, and Alan (Renae), Boyd MN, one daughter Lynn (Daryl) Dirkes, Avon MN, nine grandchildren, Heather Chrtt, Frankie Chrtt, Jacob Chrtt, Colton Chrtt, Dakota Chrtt, Shy Chrtt, Matthew Chrtt, Peyton Dirkes and Presley Dirkes, Two brothers, Ronald (Carol) Steffen, Atkinson Il, Gary (Donna Havlik) Steffen, Madrid, Iowa, 2 sisters, Donna Olsen, Platte SD and Pat (Steven) Haney, Minneapolis MN. A Brother in law, Jerry Fischer, Madrid Iowa, and a sister in law, Charlene Steffen, Rock Island Il.
     Karen was preceded in death by her father and mother, Louie and El Dora Steffen, stepfather, Freeman Ovall, sister, Marlys Fischer and brother, Melvin Steffen.
